Van 19 tot en met 21 september 2018 organiseert het Biografie Instituut, in samenwerking met de Biography Society en de Biographers International Organization, het congres Different Lives: Global Perspectives on Biography in Public Cultures and Societies. Nooit eerder werd in Nederland een zo groot aantal gerenommeerde biografen uit binnen- en buitenland bij elkaar gebracht. Nooit eerder was het perspectief zo mondiaal. Richard Holmes (UK) en Nigel Hamilton (USA) komen, maar u kunt ook kennismaken met Phuong Ngoc Nguyen (Vietnam), Lindie Koorts (Zuid-Afrika) en Étienne Naveau (Indonesië).

Drie dagen lang kijken biografen en andere experts over hun grenzen heen en gaan dieper in op de vraag hoe biografie gepraktiseerd wordt in andere delen van de wereld. Thema’s als de politieke impact, censuur en kritische receptie van de biografie komen aan de orde. Hoe kan de biografie bijdragen aan een beter begrip tussen samenlevingen en culturen? Sprekers van heel de wereld maken de stand van zaken op in hun land en delen hun bevindingen.
